Jeffrey Jones is the most enigmatic of the four artists in The Studio, with a style that is both varied and less defined. His work can be difficult to interpret, leaving viewers questioning what they are looking at and why. Some may classify him as a naturalist, an observationalist, or even an expressionist. While the book may not be as easily enjoyable as anticipated, the cover artwork, "Blind Narcissus," is a prime example of Jones' fully realized talent.
The book begins with an interview with Jones and an introduction by Irma Kurtz, both of which may come across as somewhat pretentious and difficult to penetrate. The sequential brush-and-ink works that follow, such as "Luce," "The Bridge," and "Spirit of 76," are enigmatic yet entertaining. Subsequent ink sketches, though numerous and varied in size, may leave readers wishing for larger reproductions.
The heart of the book lies in a series of full-size color paintings that can be stark, darkly expressionist, and even unsettling. As the book progresses, the tone softens slightly, with works presented in smaller sizes once again. The closing section features pencil sketches and watercolors, some pastoral in nature, including a watercolor version of "Belling the Slayer" and a sketch for "As a Child."
The book, spanning 80 pages on glossy paper with cardstock covers, measures approximately 8.5 x 11.5 inches. It includes both color and black-and-white reproductions, with titles listed in the contents page and numbered pages for non-full-bleed artworks.
