When André de Ruyter stepped into the role of Eskom CEO in January 2020, he quickly realized why it was known as the toughest job in South Africa.
Not only was the equipment neglected and the power stations aging, but there was also a serious lack of skilled workers. To top it off, corruption was running rampant within Eskom. Fake fuel oil deliveries were costing the company R100 million a month at just one power station, kneepads that should have cost R150 a pair were being bought for R80,000, and billions of rands worth of equipment were mysteriously missing from the storerooms.
With the police turning a blind eye, de Ruyter had to dive headfirst into a world he was unfamiliar with - a world of spies, safe houses, bulletproof vests, and bodyguards. In his book, "Truth to Power," de Ruyter reveals how he launched a private investigation that uncovered four criminal cartels leeching off Eskom. Along the way, he had to navigate political interference, ridiculous regulations, municipalities that refused to pay their bills, baseless accusations of racism, wildcat strikes, sabotage, and even a poisoning attempt.
De Ruyter gives readers a glimpse into the high-stakes boardrooms and government meetings where South Africa's future is decided, often with ministers pulling in different directions. He argues that renewable energy is the most cost-effective and quickest solution to the power crisis, despite fierce opposition from coal interests.
Reflecting on his three years at Eskom, de Ruyter shares his triumphs, failures, reasons for leaving, and hopes for the future. As someone who worked at the highest levels of government but remains independent from the ruling party, he is in a unique position to speak truth to power.
