These three books are separate yet closely related, each designed to depict the history of a small semi-rural community in the Cape Colony. While each book stands alone as a complete work, together they provide a comprehensive overview of the environment and the changes that have occurred over a century in the interactions between the English and Dutch-speaking members of the community.
In 1994, Stormwrack was recognized as one of South Africa's top 20 books. The recent publication of all three novels as originally intended by C Louis Leipoldt, in their entirety and as a trilogy, serves as a fitting tribute to this remarkably talented and versatile South African author. These historical novels, set in the picturesque countryside of Leipoldt's youth, enhance the experience of visitors to the Cedarberg region and bring to life the history of the Clanwilliam district with a vividness that makes the past easily recognizable in the present.
C Louis Leipoldt envisioned his trilogy of novels, Gallows Gecko, Stormwrack, and The Mask, to be published collectively under the title "The Valley." This vision will come to fruition in 2001 with the release of The Valley as a trilogy in a single volume by Stormberg Publishers.
While Stormwrack and Gallows Gecko have been previously published (in 1980 and 2000, respectively), the latter under the title "Chameleon of the Gallows," these editions contained significant edits from Leipoldt's original manuscripts.
