Since South Africa opened its borders, the country has become a safe haven for many refugees escaping coups and civil wars in other African countries. Among these refugees, children are especially vulnerable. Many arrive in South Africa alone, without parents, family, or friends, and face the daunting challenge of finding acceptance and a new home in a sometimes unwelcoming adoptive country.
Glynis Clacherty has been working with many of these children in Johannesburg. She provided them with suitcases on which they could paint their personal stories and recent histories as a way to help them cope with the trauma of their flight and arrival. The painted suitcases and the accompanying stories are the focus of this touching and thought-provoking book.
Photographs of the painted suitcases, along with narratives collected over a three-year period through interviews, reveal individual stories of hardship and longing, as well as strength and resilience. The book provides a unique insight into the lives of refugee children in South Africa, both past and present.
