In the Eastern Cape, a young Anglican priest named Stephen (Malusi) Mzamane is faced with a difficult journey to his mother's rural home to deliver news of his elder brother's passing. Stephen's educational journey began at the Native College in Grahamstown, followed by training at the Missionary College in Canterbury in 1869. Upon his return to South Africa, he found himself stationed at a run-down mission near Fort Beaufort, where he not only had to navigate the prejudices of colonial society but also confront discrimination within the Church itself.

Caught between his allegiance to the amaNgqika people, whom his brother fought for, and the colonial expectations placed upon him as Reverend Mzamane, Stephen's journey to his mother's home becomes a pivotal moment in resolving the internal conflicts that plague his heart. This journey forces him to reconcile the contradictions that have been tearing at his soul, ultimately shaping his path forward.
